With rumours of David Nugent's future at Pompey continuing in the media, do we actually have a choice if we keep him or can we not afford to lose the young striker?
Currently Pompey only have 4 recognised senior strikers at the club Benjani, Kanu, Utaka and Nugent, if Nugent goes that will be 3 strikers as we can't be sure we will replace him during the remaining 4 days of the transfer window especially considering that two of those strikers will be absent during the African Nations cup.
According to the Media we have 2 real targets Anelka and today Crouch has entered the frame. If either of those two is available there will be a host of clubs in for either player and we can't guarantee we will get either of them. Of course Harry Redknapp is world famous for pulling rabbits out of hats and it wouldn't surprise any Pompey fan for a completely unknown striker to suddenly appear much in the way Benjani did. The worst case is that we sell Nugent fail to get in another striker and we are left with 3 senior strikers until the January window.
So would you risk losing a striker that's proven in the English game but not found their feet at Premiership level for a chance of signing another striker? Personally no, if Sacha is willing to fund it I would rather see an Anelka or Crouch come in before selling Nugent is remotely thought about. Perhaps a loan of Nugent to Derby with an option to buy in January may be a better option.
The next question to ask is does anyone who can afford Nugent actually want him? Derby who seem to want Nugent don't seem to have the money and have other targets in mind such as Sheffield United's Jon Stead and Southampton's Kenwyne Jones and no-one else seems to be interested.
Comments from Harry such as "I don't want to sell David but Kanu, Benjani and John Utaka are all doing well.
"He has to be patient to get in the team but the Leeds game is a chance for some of our fringe players."
Are being reported as Redknapp's desire to sell the player, to me that reads as he is not going to get a starting place for a while as our other strikers are doing well. Which is exactly why you have a squad in the first place.
Let's hope all of this is resolved soon, as the constant media speculation about David Nugent's future can't be going the players confidence any good. Hopefully he will score tonight against Leeds get some of the boo-boys off his back.
